Understanding Complex Trauma

Complex trauma can negatively impact an individual’s life in various ways. People who have experienced complex trauma often struggle with intimacy, trust, and healthy boundaries. At LightHeart Associates, we treat various types of trauma, including post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and complex trauma. Call 425.800.5688 today to learn about our PTSD treatment and other trauma services.

What Is Complex Trauma?

Complex trauma refers to a type of trauma that occurs repeatedly and cumulatively, usually over a period of time and within specific relationships and contexts. Unlike single-incident traumas, which are linked to one particular event, complex trauma is often invasive and interpersonal, with long-term effects on the individual.

Complex trauma can lead to severe and persistent psychological issues, including PTSD, complex PTSD (C-PTSD), depression, and anxiety disorders. It’s crucial to seek professional help to navigate the healing process.

Types of Trauma

Trauma can be categorized into different types based on the nature of the traumatic events. Here are some common types:

  • Acute trauma – This results from a single distressing event, such as an accident or natural disaster.
  • Chronic trauma –This results from repeated and prolonged exposure to highly stressful events, such as domestic violence or war.
  • Complex trauma – As mentioned earlier, this involves exposure to multiple traumatic events, often of an invasive and interpersonal nature.
  • Developmental trauma –This refers to childhood trauma, such as neglect or abuse, that disrupts a child’s development.

Each type of trauma can have varying impacts on an individual’s life and requires specific treatment approaches.

What Is C-PTSD?

PTSD can develop after experiencing or witnessing a traumatic event. However, there is another type of PTSD called complex post-traumatic stress disorder (C-PTSD), which differs from traditional PTSD in several ways.

C-PTSD encompasses the symptoms of PTSD, but it also includes additional symptoms that are unique to prolonged or repeated trauma. This can include childhood abuse and neglect, domestic violence, human trafficking, captivity, ongoing harassment or bullying, and other situations where a person feels unable to escape.

The core features of C-PTSD are similar to that of PTSD: re-experiencing the trauma (flashbacks, nightmares), avoiding reminders of the trauma, and hyperarousal (feeling constantly on edge). However, C-PTSD has three additional symptoms that are not seen in traditional PTSD: a distorted sense of self and loss of identity, difficulties regulating emotions, and interpersonal challenges.

Symptoms of Complex Trauma

Symptoms of complex trauma can vary from person to person, but some common ones include:

  • Difficulty regulating emotions –People with complex trauma often struggle with managing their feelings and may experience intense emotional reactions that seem out of proportion to the situation.
  • Difficulty trusting others –After experiencing repeated betrayals or abuse, individuals may struggle to trust others and have healthy relationships.
  • Intimacy issues –Complex trauma can make it challenging for an individual to form close relationships due to fear of vulnerability.
  • Low self-esteem –Constant invalidation and abuse can lead a person to develop low self-worth and self-doubt.
  • Dissociation –This is a coping mechanism where individuals mentally detach from their thoughts, feelings, or surroundings to avoid emotional pain.

Only a professional can diagnose someone with complex trauma.
