When traditional depression treatment doesn’t bring relief, it can feel deeply discouraging—but there is hope. At LightHeart Mental Health, we understand that each person’s path to healing looks different. If you’ve tried multiple treatments for depression without success, you might be dealing with treatment-resistant depression (TRD). We offer in-person services, including Spravato® treatment, psychiatric medication management, and therapy, to help you move forward when progress feels stalled.
Change begins here. Call LightHeart Mental Health at 425.800.5688 to explore options beyond standard care.
What is treatment-resistant depression? TRD is a form of major depressive disorder (MDD) that doesn’t respond well to typical interventions like antidepressants or therapy. In clinical terms, it’s often defined as depression that continues after trying at least two different antidepressant medications at adequate doses for a sufficient length of time. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the European Medicines Agency (EMA) have adopted this definition of TRD.1
Nearly one-third of those actively seeking help for depression have TRD—proof that not finding relief right away doesn’t mean you’ve failed or that healing is out of reach. TRD can be isolating and frustrating, especially when your efforts to feel better don’t yield the results you’re hoping for.1 But the good news is that newer and more effective treatments, such as Spravato® (esketamine), are expanding the possibilities for recovery.2
Major depressive disorder shows up in many different ways. Some people experience symptoms that are primarily emotional—persistent sadness, guilt, or loss of interest in life—while others may notice physical changes, like disrupted sleep or appetite.
TRD is not a separate condition from depression but rather a way of describing how your symptoms are responding—or not responding—to current treatment approaches. Factors that may contribute to TRD include:
Your mental health provider can help identify any underlying issues that may be contributing to your current struggles and create a tailored plan to move forward.
The symptoms of TRD are often the same as typical depression, but they continue despite trying more than one standard depression treatment. You might be experiencing:
It’s also common for people with TRD to feel emotionally numb or disconnected from the world around them. These symptoms may fluctuate but rarely go away entirely.
At LightHeart Mental Health, we’re always available to give our clients the help they require at any time and place. If you’re not finding relief with standard antidepressants, there are other depression treatment options to explore, including:
We provide essential in-person mental health care services and offer telehealth options for added flexibility.
There’s no single cause. It may be related to biological differences, chronic stress, early trauma, or even the specific type of depression you’re experiencing. Some people may also have genetic markers that impact how they respond to certain medications.
No. With the right combination of therapies, medications, and support, many people do experience significant relief—even after long periods of difficulty. TRD is a challenge, not a dead end.
Spravato® may be appropriate if you’ve tried at least two antidepressants without meaningful improvement. It’s administered in-office under supervision to monitor for side effects and ensure a safe experience. Clinical trials show it can reduce symptoms rapidly for many people with TRD.
Persistent depressive disorder (PDD), bipolar depression, or depression accompanied by anxiety or PTSD can sometimes be harder to treat. That’s why it’s so important to receive a thorough evaluation from a qualified mental health provider.
LightHeart Mental Health offers more than traditional care—we provide a compassionate and encouraging atmosphere to accomplish your desired changes. Whether you’ve been navigating major depressive disorder for years or have just begun exploring treatment, our team is here to assist you in navigating through any difficulties.
We know how hard it can be when treatments don’t seem to work. But that doesn’t mean there’s no path forward. With evidence-based tools like Spravato® and an experienced, understanding team by your side, you can find a new way through. LightHeart Mental Health is here to help you manage your mental health. Call 425.800.5688 today to learn more.
