Dr. Belen Martinez earned her Bachelor of Science from Cornell University and her PsyD (Doctor of Psychology) in clinical psychology from Loyola University Maryland. Prior to joining LightHeart, Belen worked at New York-Presbyterian Hospital/Columbia University Medical Center and held a faculty appointment at Columbia University’s Department of Psychiatry.

Belen has extensive experience providing English and Spanish individual, group, and couples psychotherapy to adolescents and adults of all ages. She has worked with individuals from diverse populations and cultures, with a wide range of concerns. Belen’s approach to therapy is collaborative, authentic, empathic, active and caring. She integrates empirically driven methods, including dynamic psychotherapy, cognitive-behavioral therapy, dialectical behavior therapy, and relational frameworks, with a highly personalized approach. With respect and understanding, Belen works with each individual to help increase self-awareness and attain personal growth. In therapy, she provides support, insight, and validation to help clients effectively address personal life challenges and recognize their strengths. Belen is committed to helping her clients better understand and express their needs to engage in a healthier and more fulfilling life.

Areas of interests include depression, anxiety, self-esteem issues, trauma and abuse, stress, life transitions, grief/loss and relationship difficulties. She provides LGBTQ affirmative psychotherapy, and specializes in treating maternal mental health challenges, from mild parenting stress and worry, to severe postpartum depression and anxiety, to the grief of losing a child. Belen has also completed the Dialectical Behavior Therapy Intensive Training through Behavioral Tech. She also conducts psychological evaluations to individuals ages six through adulthood for a variety of conditions, including ADHD, learning disorders, and mood and anxiety disorders.
