Melanie (Mel) Kohler, MA, LMFTA
Marriage and Family Therapist Associate
[ accepting new clients at Redmond Medical Center ]
Mel is a Marriage and Family Therapy Associate who earned her M.A. degree in Clinical Psychology through Antioch University Seattle in 2019. Her approach to relational therapy draws upon a systemic, attachment, and humanistic perspective, situating each individual’s experiences within the context of family relationships and societal/cultural influences.
At the core of her therapeutic approach is the belief that humans are fundamentally wired for relationship and intimacy and that we are profoundly influenced by our primary relationships. Mel also understands that our drive to connect can directly compete with our drive to become a distinct individual. Melanie believes her clients are naturally equipped to adapt and create lasting change for themselves.
Mel works with adolescents, young adults, and adults. She also enjoys working with couples and has a certification in sex therapy. She has particular expertise in working with clients identified in the LGBTQIA+ and alternative lifestyle communities. Mel demonstrates sensitivity to the way in which each individual’s identity (gender, age, race, sexual orientation, etc.) influences the messages they receive from society and the way they think about themselves.
Mel helps clients understand how symptoms, such as depression and anxiety, can provide insight into how one copes and strives for safety and growth. Through therapy, clients can learn to understand their symptoms, honor their strengths, and focus on growth and healing.
